There's a man lives in my town He's never been up, but he's rarely down Everyday he takes the bus He does his work with a minimal fuss He's got a small life, big schemes High hopes, big dreams At half past eight every night He's back at home, where the bedroom light Illuminates the painful truth The needle scratches on his songs of youth He's got a warm heart, wide smile New world, old style He's a small fish in a big pond But the tide's out, he says I am a |

Everywhere there are a select band of people who are firmly rooted in their own little worlds, either through choice or never being part of the in-crowd. This song deals with two people who would be ideally suited to one another, but never dare to break out of their worlds and find the other, always left alone to dream of greater things!
Musically this song borrows from much of the sixties sytle pop, which grew out of the West Midlands area, such as Spencer Davis Group and The Move. The line at the end of the song comes from the classic track (If Paradise Is) Half As Nice by Amen Corner a Number One hit in 1969.
